Askos Susumaniello Salento IGT 2022

Think Syrah, Primitivo and Pinot fighting for their place within the glass. A must for your next dinner event where you can surprise your guests with something a bit more special.

Susumaniello is an ancient variety of red wine grape grown in the province of Brindisi, Salento, Southern Italy.

"Rich and peppery nose with bushy blackberries, mulberries, lavender extract, briar, asphalt and dark chocolate. Pretty concentrated and ripe on the palate with sweet, tight tannins. Vertical but still fluid in the middle. Plush, ripe and well-made. Drink now through to 2027." James Suckling 91/100

Askos is the name of our project dedicated to the research, selection and valorization of the local heritage of native varieties. The wines are produced exclusively with grapes coming from particularly favourable areas in which the vine is trained following tradition. The symbol is an askos, a Greek “decanter" dating from the 1st century B.C.

Deep ruby red. A wine with great character on the nose: sensations of black and red berries are backed by spicy notes, hints of licorice and cocoa and notes of eucalyptus. It is a full-bodied but not heavy wine, extremely satisfying and easy to drink. The alcohol percentage is well-balanced. Delicious now, it will age well. Winery

The vineyards of Masseria Li Veli extend over 33 hectares where native Salento varieties such as Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, Aleatico, and Susamaniello are grown. Susumaniello is a rather rare Apulian vine and until recently considered endangered. The grapes come from a vineyard over 20 years old planted on sandy-clayey soils with calcareous residues. The name 'Askos' is inspired by a Greek decanter from the 1st century BC, whose image is depicted on the label. The finished wine ages in oak barrels for 9 months.

"The wine reveals a splendid ruby red color and violet nuances. Its aromatic profile is intensely fruity with notes of cherry, cassis, rhubarb, and raspberry, followed by hints of licorice and leather. On the palate it is round and balanced by a lively acid vein. The tannins are soft and well-integrated. It is the perfect wine for pasta with tomato-based sauces or a charcuterie board."
