The brief for the terminal building was to come up with a distinctive design that sought to make the 'Sunshine Town' of WhakatÄne appealing to visitors as a holiday destination, and to contribute to a distinctive regional identity. In 2019 Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga added the Terminal to the New Zealand Heritage List RÄrangi KÅrero as a Category 1 historic place.
In his 2020 painting of Roger celebrates the quirkiness and character of the building and pays tribute with an abstract of Moutohora-Whale Island, which he referenced in his original design.
