MIRIMAY POUTAMA VASE MEDIUM

POUTAMA VASE

The vase features the Miri May pattern by Pania. It was originally designed as a textile pattern for Pania’s label. The vase is handmade and decorated by Sarah Wigley in her Te Whanganui-a-Tara studio.

Miri May is a mihi to Pania’s Nan and Grandma. Industrious and creative women, Māori and Scottish who shared their knowledge of customary crafts and art forms. Skills of weaving, knitting, and sewing Pania learned from them, and their resourceful approach to materials is an important part of her design philosophy and practice.

The climbing poutama pattern is mirrored in the ascending panels of the vase. This symbolises the passing and learning of knowledge through life and across generations and retold through our own stories.

The crosses that link the poutama pattern represent Scottish tartan.

The pattern is carved free form into the surface of the clay. Each vase will be different, especially in the layout of the pattern.

The vase size is suitable for a moderate size bouquet.
