Kahurangi Ridge-Bound Hei Matau/Hook Pendant
This Hei Matau pendant is 63mm in length and 32mm at its widest. It has the traditional ridge-knot binding around the top. This was one of the bindings used by the Maori to attach the pounamu (jade) to wooden or bone handles to use as tools and weapons.
The Hei Matau has a waxed nylon cord so the pendant can be worn ALL the time. It is extremely strong and made to be worn all the time - even in the water. The cord is adjustable by pinching the special knots between your thumb and finger and pulling.
The Hei Matau is shaped/scalloped at the back so that it is comforting to rub with your thumb when it is being worn.
The Pounamu (jade) for the Hei Matau was collected from the Marsden Valley in the Paroa area just outside of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand.
Pendant Meaning : The Hei Matau / hook gives the wearer strength and determination.
It brings peace, prosperity and good health.
It also provide the wearer with a safe journey through life - both a safe physical journey, especially over water and also helps them get through any hardships and tough times they may face.
