Unsustainable is is a beautiful, thought provoking artwork by Yaniv Janson about Life Below Water, and the consequences of what might happen beneath the Ocean if we don't try to protect it. In October 2020, I met Yaniv, an internationally acclaimed artist from Raglan in a magical chance encounter on the Auckland to Wellington train. The Unsustainable Sweatshirt is a collaboration with Yaniv featuring his exquisite painting. At an early age, Yaniv was diagnosed with both autism and epilepsy, yet he maintains a hunger for taking control of his life through the work he loves most: spirit-lifting, world-changing art. .
People connect strongly with issues prevalent in Yanivâs work: the problems humanity faces with global warming, affordable and warm housing and environmental sustainability. As such, Yaniv has participated in more than 40 exhibitions worldwide & sold in excess of 180 paintings. In 2018 he was personally invited to solo exhibit a collection of his breathtaking works at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. His stunning Unsustainable painting was a feature of this exhibition. Yaniv eloquently describes what Unsustainable is all about:
. âWhat would the ocean look life if we do not look after it? The ocean would be empty of all living things and would be dark and sad. Without life below water there will be no more food and less jobs because fish will die and there will be no fishing. The blue and black represents sadness which is why it is the main colour in this painting. Everything has disappeared and it is all over as there are no living things anymore. The water is not safe to swim in. I want this painting to affect people and make them consider their actions toward the environment and sustainability, as this is a picture of what could happen if we continue to take the ocean for granted. I want people to start to look after the oceans sooner rather than later. So that there is a bigger chance for good things to happen like saving life within the world's waters".
